Some people considered the elite unit as a part of the Waffen-SS. Though that is not the case. The Grossdeutschland (GD) Division was a division that was part of the German army, ‘der Wehrmacht’. In the Wehrmacht the Grossdeutschland Division had a special place. The Grossdeutschland Division just like the Panzer Lehr Divsion was supplied with better material than other units in the Wehrmacht. The soldiers of the Grossdeutschland Division also received their supplies faster and was reinforced if the soldiers felt it necessary. )n many cases they got their supplies even faster than the Waffen-SS. The Grossdeutschland Division fought mostly on the Eastern Front against the Russians. One of the most renowned officers of the division was Hasso-Eccard Freiherr von Manteuffel. On 1 February 1944 he became the commander of the GD Panzergrenadier Division. This division was founded in 1943 within the Grossdeutschland Division. Through the supply of Tigertanks in June 1943, the fighting power of the Grossdeutschland Division was considerably increased. The supply of these tanks also resulted in a name change. The Grossdeutschland Division became from then on the Panzergrenadier-Division Großdeutschland. The Panzergrenadier Division had more armed vehicles than most other German panzer divisions that were still fighting. As of 1943 the Grossdeutschland Division took part on a number of important battles at the Eastern Front. Under the command of von Manteuffel the GD Panzergrenadier Division was able to bring many defensive battles to a good end among which the battle west of Kirovograd and some battles in Roumania. In May 1945 the Grossdeutschland division was dissolved in the Russian town of Pillau.
