RALPH GIBSON
(* 16. January 1939, Los Angeles, California)
Important contemporary American photographer.
As a student, Ralph Gibson appeared as an extra in Alfred Hitchcock und Nicholas Ray movies. He studied photography at the San Francisco Art Institute from 1956 until 1962 and subsequently became Dorothea Lange’s assistant. In 1969, Gibson moved to New York and collaborated with Robert Frank on the movie “Me and my Brother”. He founded his publishing house “Lustrum Press” in that same year.
In his photographic oeuvre, Ralph Gibson cultivated the aspect of the surreal and metaphysical. In one of his first works, “The Somnambulist”, for example, he takes the observer on a metaphysical and dreamlike journey, achieving the desired effect by sensibly selecting certain viewframes.
Ralph Gibson’s work is considered a classic in modern photography. He is represented in the collections of nearly all major international museums and has
published more than 20 books.
