Giuseppe Mazzotti - M.G.A. - Vaso - Cerâmica

A wonderful vase from M.G.A. company of Giuseppe Mazzotti, one of the oldest and most valuable pottery factories. From the age of twelve, Giuseppe Mazzotti, was a ceramist apprentice at the furnace "Fornari" in Albisola. After being employed as a turner in Livorno, at the "Bonfiglio" factory and in Naples, at "Picone" factory, Giuseppe Mazzotti, also known as Bausin, in 1903, opened his own shop in the premises of Vicolo del Pozzo in Albisola, where he made chimneys for the construction industry. Soon enough, the furnace changed its name into Fabbrica di Ceramiche d'Arte Tradizionali e Moderne Giuseppe Mazzotti and started manufacturing art ceramic on its own, signing every piece that came out of his shop with his initials "M.G.A." Thanks also to the collaboration of some well-known ceramists from Albisola, such as Pietro Rabbia and Dario Ravano, in 1906 Mazzotti, was awarded a gold medal for his works at the Savona craft show and, thanks to his success, he decided to open a retail shop, managed by his wife Celestina Gerbino Promis. In the years after the first World War, young painter Giuseppe Agnino collaborated with the Mazzotti factory. From 1922 to 1927, the retired lieutenant-colonel Guido Cavallero, who was also a painter and decorator, entered into partnership with Mazzotti to form the "Premiata Fabbrica Ceramiche Artistiche già Mazzotti di Cavallero & C." The new company production was sometimes signed as "Cavallero & Mazzotti". During these years, also great independent ceramists, such as Mario Gambetta, Virio da Savona and Paolo Rodocanachi cooperated with the factory. In 1923 a second factory building was opened, in Albisola Superiore, under the direction of Torido Mazzotti, Giuseppe's eldest son. In 1925, some ceramics with the mark "M.G.A." were exhibited at the International Exhibition of Decorative and Modern Arts in Paris and the success achieved introduced the factory to the international market. In 1928, the factory created a catalogue of its own production in which it presented over five hundred ceramic pieces, classic, modern and the first works in Futurism style.
